Mary Jane Holmes was well known in her time and was second only to her contemporary Harriet Beecher Stowe in sales of books. During her lifetime she sold over two million books. But as the twentieth century came into being, critics categorized Holmes’ and other women authors’ work as “sentimental” and downplayed it because of appeal to the average reader. Her books usually employ a female protagonist, and although written in a style that may seem old fashioned today, she spoke of many of the issues and concerns faced by women of her day.
